5 MUST-HAVE SNACKS FOR THE WORKPLACE
Snacking is an entire subculture of workplace food habits. To be a truly great office snack, it has to be portable, it has to keep in that bottom drawer of your desk, and it gets bonus points for keeping up your energy in those after-lunch meetings and when you have to stick around after hours for the big project. For this reason, it can never just be healthy snacks (where’s the fun in that?) and it can never just be junk food — because remember the freshman 15? This will be more like the office 30.
USA Today looked into this workplace snacking subculture and found some strange stats on what goes on when you get the office munchies.
- People consume up to 700 extra calories a day through snacking alone
- Workers consume an average of 2.2 more pieces of chocolate when the treat is placed in clear jars versus opaque
- Workers consume 1.8 more pieces of candy when the jar is located near their desk versus across the room
- When Google’s New York office replaced a glass jar of freebie M&Ms with dried fruit, their 2,000 employees collectively consumed 3.1 million fewer calories over a seven-week period
What these stats show is that when it comes to office snacks, it’s definitely in sight, in mind. So employees should stock their own snack supply to avoid eating all the office admin’s candy jar of M&Ms just because it’s there — and when they really prefer Skittles or almonds.
In case you need some snacking inspiration, here are five great workplace treats that will keep you healthy and indulge that sweet tooth too.
1. String cheese
Keep it in the office refrigerator with your initals on it. The high protein count will keep you going when you get the mid-afternoon sleepies, and it will fill you up. As a bonus, you get to feel like a grade-school kid again.
2. Peanut M&Ms
They’re the superior M&M, and the nuts add a bit of protein to your indulgence. Just be prepared for everyone and their manager coming to your desk pretending to want “face time” on a project but really just scooping up handfuls.
3. Trail mix
Get in your almond superfood, add in some macadamia nuts for pure luxury, and don’t forget the chocolate chips because it’s not like you have to be completely healthy, right?
4. Hummus and vegetables
Keep a tub of your favorite hummus in the office fridge and take three minutes to cut up red pepper, carrots, celery, cucumber, or whatever veggie you dream up to dip in. Bonus points for dressing up your hummus with some pesto, roasted red pepper, or hot sauce.
5. Chex Mix
Is it health food? Is it junk food? There’s no easy answer. Plus, you can mix it up and go for the cheesy or spicy blend. But if you really want to get serious about workplace snack indulgences, go straight for the sweet Muddy Buddies and every coworker will suddenly be your best friend.
Whatever your favorite sweets and healthy snacks are, just keep them in stock. After all, you can’t subsist on coffee alone.
